Why We Break Plates – On Purpose

February 24, 2014

Breaking plates is a call-back to the Greek tradition of breaking plates, which is symbol of the celebration of life. The Cleo staff starts with a slow clap that increases in tempo and noise level as a guest hams up the crowd by shaking a plate. At the crescendo, the crowd breaks into applause, the guest shatters the plate, and everyone yells “Ooooopa!!!” The word “Opa” means celebration of life.
