Around the globe, there’s no shortage of pioneering women DJs. However, the music industry is still heavily male-dominated when it comes to who gets booked and who gets recognition. So, in our first nightlife roundup of 2016, here’s a shout out to five female DJs to know this year.

Lauren “KITTENS” Abedini
Lauren Abiding, aka KITTENS, got her start DJing for Kid Cudi and has also been championed by Usher and A-Track, who signed her to his Fool’s Gold label. But Abedini stands out first and foremost for her eclectic music—a mash-up of hip-hop, electronic, and pop.

Mia Moretti
Having just finished opening Katy Perry’s Prismatic World Tour, meeting Hilary Clinton and collaborating with Major Lazer, Moretti’s 2015 ended with a bang. No doubt this year will be equally dynamic for the New York-based DJ and musician.

Ellen Allien
The German producer, DJ, and musician has been synonymous with IDM and techno in Europe since the early 90s, and she’s still going strong. She now splits her time at residencies in Ibiza and Berlin, and at the beginning of 2016 will be playing festivals in Playa del Carmen, Reykjavik, London and other exotic locales.

Nicole Moudaber
Hailing from Nigeria, residing in London, this eclectic DJ was a self-professed professional partier before trying her hand at music. Part Lebanese, she was one of the first to bring dance music to Beirut and fortunately for us hasn’t looked back since.

Rebecca & Fiona
Swedish duo Rebecca Scheja and Fiona Fitzpatrick, have frequently killed it at Create, with their club anthems and infectious energy. The pair has been friends for over seven years and are still having as much fun as when they started.
