Let’s be honest: most of us are going to drink more than our fair share this New Year’s Eve. And that’s part of the fun. What’s not so fun is an awful hangover the next day. To make sure your 2016 doesn’t start off with the worst kind of bang (that won’t go away no matter how much aspirin you take), here are ten helpful pointers for before the party even starts.

  1. Double up on multivitamins to keep your nutrients intact.
  2. Eat dinner – preferably a filling one – before going out.
  3. Drink plenty of water before the night gets started, and continue throughout.
  4. Skip the cigarettes.
  5. Go clear – darker drinks have more impact the next day than gins and vodkas.
  6. Go high end – top shelf liquor is always better than the bartender’s default option.
  7. Just say no to bubbles – while we’re all for poppin’ bottles in moderation when it comes to cocktails, carbonated mixers speed up alcohol absorption in your bloodstream.
  8. Get frequent fresh air throughout the night.
  9. Get plenty of sleep.
  10. Dance your face off – exercise keeps the toxins from taking over.
