LOCAL GUIDES

Next Level: LA’s Third Wave Coffee Movement

Third Wave Coffee is flourishing in Los Angeles, and the movement is creeping into every neighborhood from Malibu to Downtown L.A. More than ever you’ll find coffee bars roasting their own beans, boasting organic, sustainable brews, and making their own almond milks. For better or for worse, however, some of these establishments don’t cater to allergies or restrictions, because they’ve created an experience which they staunchly believe allows one to experience the true flavor of the bean and its roast. If it’s high-quality beans, single-origin coffee, and latte art that you seek, look no further: this guide will take you on a caffeine fueled adventure.

Cafecito Organico

1

This coffee bar, now with multiple locations, was born out of a garage with a goal to deliver sustainable coffee from Central America. Now finding its way to Malibu, Cafecito Organico still focuses on fair and sustainable practices, while maintaining its high quality coffee. They roast their own beans, and keep their brews organic. They offer cold brews in the house, as well as agave sweetened concoctions. Try an Espresso Clandestino with steamed milk and raw sugarcane juice if you’re looking for something new.

Cognoscenti Coffee

2
From pop-up to now brick and mortar, Culver City’s Cognoscenti is a hip coffee bar with a menu similar to its space – minimal, inviting, and well executed. Come for their pour over but stay for the cortado, an espresso cut with a small amount of warm milk. They have a nice rotation of high-quality roasters on deck, and if you can’t make it to this side of town, swing by their cart at Good Girl Dinette in Highland Park or grab a cup at Proof Bakery in Atwater Village. Hungry? Swing by on Wednesdays when Guerilla Tacos pulls up to curb and slings their goods.

Go Get Em Tiger

3

From the men behind G&B, is Go Get Em Tiger, a Larchmont coffee bar that introduces people to distinct coffees of the world. They have meticulously curated a unique selection of beans, with flavor being of the utmost importance. At GGET, if dairy is your game, they only serve whole milk, and if you’re trying to make your cup sweeter, sugar is the only way to go. For those with nut milks on the brain, their iced almond-macadamia milk latte might just be the most perfect drink of the summer! Poured into beautiful ceramics hand-thrown by Ben Medansky, everything about this spot is on point.

Handsome Roasters

4
Enjoy Handsome while it still has its name because this spring it was announced they were acquired by one of the Bay’s favorites, Blue Bottle Coffee. Remember the days of pulling up to Handsome Roasters, witnessing people nervously order, but then chilling out once they got their cup of coffee, and if they were lucky, breakfast from the Egg Slut truck parked out front. Things have changed since then, but the flavor and seriousness of Handsome has remained the same. Their menu is not catered for everyone and they are OK with that—no sugar or milk alternatives, so check your food hangups at the door.

Lamill Coffee

5

Have you ever seen an Alpha Dominche Steampunk coffee maker in action? If you answered no to that question, do yourself a favor and put it on your list of things to do this summer. There are only a few of these incredible machines in L.A. and one of them can be found at Lamill, a Silverlake hot spot for those wanting a cup of luxurious coffee or tea. The Steampunk is a first of its kind in the industry, with the capabilities of offering flavor profiles similar to those produced from French press to pour-over. Their food menu is much larger than most coffee bars, so order some warm brioche donuts to go with your drink. Plus, starting on August 23rd, The Perq at SLS Las Vegas will exclusively brew Lamill coffee – so come drink up!

Menotti’s

6
At Menotti’s, their motto is “inspiring the neighborhood together, one cup at a time.” Those positive vibes sound just about right for Venice. They proudly serve San Francisco's Four Barrel coffee, loved by many in California and beyond. Their cold brews are on point, and like with everything at this tiny coffee bar, each drip is made with love. If you’re not sure what to order, a barista will guide you through your choices, making sure you sip on something that best suits your palate. And if you're looking for latte art for that perfect Instagram photo, Menotti's never disappoints.

Paper or Plastik

7
There’s something interesting happening on Pico Blvd (Mid-City) right now and Paper or Plastik has been a part of the action for some time. If you are looking for pour over, they have a rotating selection of individually crafted brews. They serve their own roasted coffee in addition to Intelligentsia, Handsome Coffee Roasters, and Coava. If you’re looking for a Gibraltar — shorter than a latte, taller than a macchiato, they got you. When you want something other than a classic Americano or latte, turn up with an espresso float that will surely elevate your day.

Stumptown

8
At Stumptown, quality is of the essence. They source some of the world’s best coffees and aim to keep a transparent relationship with their farmers, thus creating an environment that is dedicated to everyone’s well being, not just their employees and customers. When you stroll through the doors of Stumptown, not only are your nostrils awakened with the deep smells of roasting coffee, but their giant glass windows give you a glimpse of the roasting that goes into every cup. At Stumptown, they take a raw green coffee bean and gently ease it into its final state. Take a sip of your freshly prepared cup, and think about the time that went into crafting that greatness.
