With her signature cool-girl-chic and borrowed-from-the-boys athletic vibes, there’s no denying that Lauren “KITTENS” Abedini is a style force to be reckoned up. We caught up with the stylish spin-star before her upcoming (and highly anticipated!) debut at The Emerson Theatre for some girl talk and set prep. Read on to get the inside scoop on the KITTENS look and for a chance to win a VIP table at her show this Friday, February 27th!

So, how did you get your start in this industry?

I actually used to do marketing and talent buying for a club in Hollywood about a year after I had started DJing. So I’d play there sometimes…then someone who worked for Kid Cudi had seen me play and connected us. I began touring as his DJ shortly after that and met a ton of great people along the way. I was still doing my day job at the club as well so through that I was able to make friends with a bunch of other artists, agents, and other industry people who have all shown me great support throughout my journey.

Let’s talk about your killer look  –  what are the 5 things in your closet you can’t live without?

I basically live in these UPXUNDR oversized t shirts…they work as a dress, shirt…they’re just super comfy and versatile.  J Brand black leather leggings, Black Nike slide sandals cuz…comfort, Steve Madden black heeled boots, it’s always nice to have something that gives me height and comfortable enough to wear all night and an Adidas black/white track jacket. I like being able to throw it over something more dressy just to rough things up a bit.

What is your most unexpected source of inspiration for your music?

Women. I don’t think this is very unexpected but women always inspire me in one way or another. Whether one just broke my heart and got me all emotional or if I just want to make them all dance at the club. You always know there’s girls up in the club too who just got dumped or had a stressful day at work or something and being able to give people a release and distraction is a great job to have.

The one song you know will always get the crowd going?

ASAP Ferg –  “Work” for sure

Any pre-show rituals?

If I’m at home/in my hotel Ill usually have a coffee and take a quick nap. Then once I get to the club get myself a Jameson/Coke to relax a bit before I go on.

You’re playing in a male dominated industry. How do you break the stereotypes and differentiate yourself as a female artist?

I demand respect 100% and am very business oriented so if someone makes even a slightly misogynistic comment towards me in either a sexual way or relating to my skills as a ‘girl’ artist I immediately put them in their place…you have to work extra hard to be taken seriously. I don’t dress overly sexy for attention or flirt my way into getting gigs. I just try to let my work speak for itself. I break the stereotypes by just being myself….playing music I truly like, dressing in what feels comfortable to me, and holding true to my beliefs.
