As New York City gains 2 shiny new properties with SLS Park Avenue opening later this year, and with the recent opening of The Redbury New York, sbe Hotel Group is thrilled to welcome a new fearless leader in the Big Apple. Prior to joining Sydell as opening Managing Director of the Line Hotel in Los Angeles, Gary Thomas, a 17-year veteran of the hotel industry, worked for Morgans Hotel Group for over 10 years before joining the sbe family when he became General Manager of SLS Beverly Hills in 2015. - Tell us something interesting about yourself that we might not know.
I love to spend time in the great outdoors whether it is riding my dirt bike, going on an adventure ride destination unknown or camping on the roof of my car!
- What do you love most about working in the hospitality industry?
I love walking the hotel every morning and shaking hands with my team, hearing about what happened the night before and what their day is looking like. Being exposed to people from all walks of life in very cool and edgy surroundings, can’t be bad!
- How did you get your start with sbe and what is your new role?
I started my journey with SBE as the General Manager of the SLS Beverly Hills and after “Living the West Coast Dream” I recently moved back to New York City in an Area role overseeing the Redbury and the opening of the SLS Park Avenue.
- Any funny stories from your time in New York so far?
The Redbury formerly the Martha Washington Hotel has many interesting stories to tell and I’m afraid that the team and I don’t kiss and tell!
- When not at work, where can we find you?
Sitting at the bar at Balthazar having a glass of red wine and a steak au poivre!
- What is your favorite destination to travel to?
I have two amazing children now and as such travel requires a lot more planning and preparation, that said we have spent the last few vacations on Hilton Head Island that has great beaches and a very relaxed family “vibe” that suits us perfectly at the this stage in our lives!
