There are few things DJ Tigerlily can’t do. With mermaid-like blue hair, the Australian-born multi-tasker has been bringing her mix of electro and progressive house to cities around the world, all the while pursuing a degree in marketing and communications, championing various causes, and looking amazing while doing it all. Those in Los Angeles on September 23rd will have a chance to see Tigerlily in action when she plays Create. And in the meantime, we get to know the iconic music maker.
What can we look forward to from your set at Create?
A super high energy set. I have so much fun when I play, and I think people can see that.
What was the most memorable show you ever played and why?
That is a loaded question. It’s so difficult as there have been so many amazing shows. I would have to say playing my first ever headline show at Hakkasan in Las Vegas at the MGM Grand was pretty memorable and incredible.
You are an activist for many causes, what are you currently passionate about that you’d like people to rally around?
I’m an ambassador for an Australian-based charity called LifeLine that supports and promotes the development of mental health and the prevention of suicide. We live in a world that is dominated by social media and depression, anxiety and suicide run rife in our global community. I want the youth of this world, and my own children, to grow up feeling comfortable and confident to talk about mental health, and to feel supported and connected to their community.
I am also really passionate about health in general. I see so many people making poor decisions for their health: eating fast food, taking drugs, substance abuse, and it just makes me so sad. The first stop is education and accessibility. We need to teach people to respect their bodies, respect their minds, respect one another and then finally to respect our world as a whole. At the end of the day, we are the same, a manifestation of nature and God in human form, and I think people have the ability to forget that so quickly!
You have an incredible social media following – what is your approach to keeping fans engaged, while still maintaining a personal life, or are the boundaries blurred? (@djtigerlily)
Boundaries are blurred. I am adamant about doing all my social media platforms myself. It’s the only way I can connect with my audience, and so for me, having complete control of them is really important. I like to use them not only to promote my music but to talk about health, the environment, food choices, art, creativity, anything! I love social media and think it’s an incredible tool that we have; I feel very lucky to be growing up in an age where it exists as it’s provided me with so much opportunity. But at the same time, it can be very dangerous and all consuming, so it needs to be used with caution.
How do you decide which hair color to go with?
I have been a whole range of different colors, but the turquoise suits my complexion the best (or so my mother says, haha) so I’ve decided to stick with it.
You play all around the world – what’s the first thing you do when you get to a new city?
Sleep! Haha. It depends on how much time I have really. For example, I was in Connecticut last night, for literally eight hours, but before that, I was in Vancouver for three days. I love to explore what the local restaurant scene has to offer. I love finding cute coffee shops and diverse vegan cafes. I also love getting out of cities and exploring the landscape, hiking, beaches, lakes; you name it!
We’ve heard Australians love to party – true or false?
