In just three days, music’s most raucous celebration—the MTV Video Music Awards—is upon us. On August 30, Justin Bieber, The Weekend, and Nick Jonas will take the stage to remind us why 2015 was such a sonically seminal year.
Over the decades, the VMA’s have been a place to make not only music history but also pop culture history. Over the course of one and a half hours of live TV, trends are born, fashion statements made, and in some cases marriages broken. And this year with Miley Cyrus hosting styled by Jeremy Scott, and Kanye West involved to receive the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award anything could happen. Before it all kicks off, here’s a look back at the five best moments at the MTV Music Awards.
Lady Gaga’s Shows up in 40 Pounds of Beef
Vegetarians around the world shuddered when Lady Gaga showed up to the 2010 VMAs wearing her Meat Dress comprised of 40 pounds of Argentinian beef. The bold move was to demonstrate that she wasn’t “a piece of meat,” and we think the point got across loud and clear.
Twerking Miley Cyrus
As per usual, Miley Cyrus had tongues wagging during her twerk-filled performance with Robin Thicke in 2013. When the “Blurred Lines” performer came onstage, he was backed into by a latex bikini clad Cyrus dropping jaws around the world.
Kanye West Being Kind of an A-Hole
Speaking of Kanye…who could forget that time in 2009 when he grabbed the mic during Taylor Swift’s acceptance speech for best video. In Kanye’s mind his buddy Bey should have won for “Single Ladies,” telling the world, “Imma let you finish, but Beyonce had one of the best videos of all time!”
Britney Spears Lip Locked with Madonna
The world wasn’t ready for a threesome between music heavy-weights Madonna, Britney Spears, and Christina Aguilera. But when the three performed “Like a Virgin” at the 2003 VMAs it was pretty much on as Madonna leaned over to a puckered up Britney and Christina.
Michael Jackson and Lisa Marie Presley’s Awkward Kiss
Before Madonna, Michael Jackson and Lisa Marie Presley held the title for the “Kiss that Shocked the World.” When the King of Pop leaned over to kiss his bride to be at the 1994 VMAs, she looked like she was going to faint. The hope was they’d dispel rumors their union was just for show. We’ll let you be the judge.
