The week long cultural extravaganza that is Art Basel Miami Beach officially kicks off December 1. Exhibitions, performances, and art fairs galore will take over the sunny city until Sunday with the world’s best artists, the world’s best parties, and the world’s best people watching. With all this comes some necessary planning to make sure you get the most out of your trip to the Sunshine State. Behold, our Art Basel survival guide:
- Leave Your Ambition at the Door
There constant events happening back to back during Art Basel—all day, every day. What will keep you most sane is knowing you won’t get to everything, and that’s okay. Prioritize your “must sees” and if there’s time for anything after that, great.
- Plan Your Partying
There are hundreds of parties during the week. The hottest ticket events will be at the Delano with a special exhibition of Terry O’Neill’s photography; the newly opened SLS Brickell, which will host a party for the Perez Art Museum; SLS South Beach and the always buzzing Raleigh Miami Beach, known for their mojitos and late night swimming in their iconic pool.
- Know the Enemy: Traffic
During Basel, South Beach is packed with bumper to bumper traffic—everyone trying to get to their next event on time. Strategize going to events on the same side of the city so you don’t loose time to traffic. And when all else fails, hop on a Miami Citi Bike—how yours truly gets around every year: you’ll beat the traffic, and ride to your destination beachside.
- Remember that Not All Satellite Fairs are Created Equal
There are dozens of satellite art fairs taking place during the main event, but not all are created equal. The not-to-miss fairs are of course Art Basel; then make sure to check out Untitled, NADA, Pulse, and Design Miami. Trust me, all others you’re fine to experience vicariously through social media.
- Dress for Success (and Stamina)
Art Basel is as much about the people and fashion as it is about the art. Get out your best gear, and remember, flats are your friend—you’ll be walking a lot and don’t want to tire out before happy hour hits. The most successful art hoppers stash a pair of heels in their bag for when the sun goes down.
- Don’t Forget to Eat
This may seem obvious, but with so much going on, it can be easy to skip a meal or two. Stop into Michael Schwartz’s new Fi’lia and José Andrés’ Bazaar Mar at SLS Brickell, or Cleo at The Rebury South Beach for refueling.
If you can’t make the trip this year, not to worry, there are plenty of influencers on the ground to make sure you don’t miss any of the action. Find out who to follow here.
